A Zebra Hartmann’s (Equus zebra hartmannae) is a subspecies of the Mountain Zebra native to southwestern Africa, particularly Namibia and Angola. It is known for its striking black-and-white striped coat and its adaptation to rocky, arid mountainous terrain.

  • Size: Adult Hartmann’s Zebras weigh between 220–350 kg (485–770 lbs). They stand about 110–130 cm (43–51 inches) at the shoulder, with males generally larger than females.
  • Color/Stripes: The coat features bold black-and-white stripes that are narrower and more sharply defined than in other zebra species. The stripes do not extend across the belly, leaving it mostly white, and they often form a grid-like pattern on the hindquarters.
  • Face Markings: The face is also heavily striped, with distinctive black stripes framing the eyes and muzzle, creating a dramatic contrast against the lighter areas of the face.
  • Horns/Teeth: Instead of horns, zebras have strong teeth adapted for grazing on tough, dry grasses.
  • Diet: Zebras Hartmann’s are grazers, feeding primarily on short grasses and occasionally leaves. They are well adapted to arid environments and can survive on sparse vegetation, often moving across rugged terrain to find water and fresh grazing.
