A King’s Wildebeest is a rare and striking variation of the Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), a large antelope native to Southern and Eastern Africa. This variation is distinguished by its darker, more pronounced coloration and robust build compared to typical Blue Wildebeest.

  • Size: Adult King’s Wildebeest are large and muscular, with males weighing between 180–250 kg (400–550 lbs) and females slightly lighter at 150–200 kg (330–440 lbs). They stand about 115–125 cm (45–49 inches) at the shoulder.
  • Color: The coat is dark brown to black, especially on the head, neck, and shoulders, creating a more dramatic contrast than the standard Blue Wildebeest. The body often has a bluish-grey tint, and the underparts are lighter.
  • Face Markings: They have a dark face with a lighter muzzle, giving a bold, mask-like appearance. Some may show faint pale markings around the eyes.
  • Horns: Both males and females have curved, crescent-shaped horns that sweep outward and then curve upward. Male horns are typically thicker and heavier.
  • Diet: King’s Wildebeest are grazers, feeding primarily on short grasses in savannas and floodplains. They are highly migratory, moving seasonally in search of fresh grazing and water.
