A Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) is a medium-sized primate native to Eastern and Southern Africa, known for its social behavior, intelligence, and distinctive facial markings. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in a range of habitats, from savannas to riverine forests and even near human settlements.

  • Size: Adult Vervet Monkeys typically weigh between 3–7 kg (6.5–15 lbs). Males are larger than females, with body lengths of 40–60 cm (16–24 inches), excluding the tail, which can add another 50–70 cm (20–28 inches).
  • Color: Their fur is generally grey-green to olive-brown, with lighter underparts. The tail is long and often darker at the tip, aiding in balance when moving through trees.
  • Face Markings: Vervets are easily recognized by their black faces framed with white fur, and the area around the eyes and mouth is usually hairless. This striking facial contrast is one of their most distinctive features.
  • Teeth: Vervets have strong canine teeth, particularly in males, which are used for defense and social dominance displays.
  • Diet: Vervet Monkeys are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, seeds, flowers, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates. They are opportunistic feeders and are known to forage both on the ground and in trees.
