A Porcupine is a robust, nocturnal rodent best known for its formidable defensive quills and widespread distribution across Africa. The species most commonly referred to in Southern Africa is the Cape Porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis), the largest rodent on the continent.

  • Size: Adult Cape Porcupines typically weigh between 10–30 kg (22–66 lbs) and measure 60–80 cm (24–31 inches) in body length, with an additional 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) tail. Males and females are similar in size.
  • Color: Porcupines have a black or dark brown body covered with long, sharp quills that are black and white banded. These quills can be raised when the animal feels threatened, making it appear larger and more intimidating.
  • Face Markings: The face is relatively blunt with coarse hair and small eyes. It lacks prominent facial markings, though white bristles may be visible around the cheeks and muzzle.
  • Quills: Instead of horns, porcupines possess stiff, hollow quills that can detach easily when embedded in a predator. The tail has specialized quills called rattles, which produce a warning sound when shaken.
  • Diet: Porcupines are herbivorous foragers, feeding mainly on roots, tubers, bulbs, bark, fallen fruit, and occasionally agricultural crops. They may also gnaw on bones to obtain essential minerals such as calcium.
