ABOUT:

The Cape Grysbok (Raphicerus melanotis) is a small antelope species native to the southern and western parts of South Africa. It’s one of the more elusive and shy members of the Bovidae family and is often found in dense bush, scrubland, and fynbos habitats. The Cape grysbok is notable for its small size, with adults typically weighing between 8 to 12 kg (17 to 26 pounds).

  • Size: Small, with a shoulder height of about 45–55 cm (18–22 inches) and a body length of around 75–90 cm (30–35 inches).
  • Color: It has a grayish-brown or reddish-brown coat with a white underbelly, and its legs and face often feature white markings.
  • Diet: Cape grysboks are primarily browsers, feeding on grasses, leaves, and shrubs.
  • Behavior: They are solitary and very secretive, preferring to stay hidden in thick vegetation. They are typically more active at dawn and dusk.
  • Habitat: Prefers areas with dense vegetation, such as fynbos, bushveld, and scrubby, hilly terrain.
